Events

2012

  • Marriott - back to the Aspen Institute on Maryland's Eastern Shore to share the Bootstrap Leadership lessons with a high-level group of corporate executives.
  • Marriott - at the annual Southern Region offsite for extended stay property GM's, we put the exercises and learnings from the book to great use in this two hour session in Miami, FL.
  • PSTC - Boston was the setting for a presentation of the Bootstrap Leadership concepts to a group of executives who serve on the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council.
  • Bank of America - whirlwind three days w/ B of A leaders; we conducted five sessions in New York and Charlotte to bring the lessons of Bootstrap Leadership to managers and HR professionals across a variety of leadership programs.
  • Lockheed Martin - working with the head of LM's Security team, we filmed three videos in one sitting (to show throughout 2012); each covered a different chapter of the book, and will be used to inspire leaders to continue developing their leadership skills. 
  • Marriott - first of many 2012 GM Leadership Program's on the Eastern Shore of Maryland - Bootstrap Leadership was the final session of a week long program.
  • Marriott - in this event for Finance leaders across Marriott, conducted in Bethesda, MD, we talked about the challenges associated with continuing to elevate your game as a leader
  • Medco - another audience of terrific Medco leaders in Montvale, NJ joined me in talking about leading yourself before you can effectively lead change
  • NAPMW - fun, informal evening presentation of Bootstrap Leadership for this mortgage association committee in Reston, VA
  • Bank of America - Bootstrap Leadership was the subject of this keynote presentation in the virtual final session of one of the company's flagship leadership programs
  • Marriott - an opportunity to introduce 200+ hotel general managers to the ideas and tips from Bootstrap Leadership in this fun session in Philadelphia, PA
  • Medco - in the spirit of "raising your game" as a leader, this half-day session on Leading Change in Challenging Times was the capstone to a 2-day offsite for a Medco leadership team in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
  • Lockheed Martin - presented three 30-minute live video broadcasts based on different chapters from Bootstrap Leadership to the Security Team over the first few months of 2012. 
  • Ashland - a two-hour workshop on Leading Successful Integrations, based in part on the lessons of raising your leadership game to new levels in times of great change.

2011

  • HRPS - a webinar for Human Resources People & Strategy members based on the lessons of Bootstrap Leadership.  We specifically talked about how HR professionals can encourage leaders to self-develop.
  • Bank of America - two November sessions in New York City and Charlotte, NC brought the concept of developing your own leadership game alive for groups of emerging B of A leaders.
  • Louisville Emerging Leaders Program - Bootstrap Leadership was chosen as the book of the month for this communty leadership program in Louisville, KY.  
  • Prince William County - an opportunity to give back.  This pro-bono workshop was conducted for a PWC Criminal Justice Academy audience in Manasas, VA.
  • Marriott - final GM Leadership Program of the 2011.  Another great Bootstrap Leadership session with GMs who are motivated to get better every day as a leader.
  • Ashland - the speciality chemicals company hosted Bootstrap Leadership in Columbus, Ohio - where I worked with a terrific group of leaders to work on improving their leadership skills.  
  • BNY Mellon Investment Management - the flagship BNY Mellon leadership program, designed by Dave DeFilipo, whom I've partnered with for four years to deliver leadership lessons that led to the publishing of Bootstrap Leadership
  • Marriott - back to the eastern shore of Maryland to deliver a session to inspire leaders to take their game to the next level using the book's key messages.
  • BNY Mellon FMTS - strong relationship with this group at one of the world's leading companies.  As the closing session of a 12-month leadership program, we worked through the concepts from Bootstrap Leadership
  • Marriott - reprisal of the GM Leadership Program's Developing Your Leadership Brand session, based on the lessons from the book.
  • American Express - multiple telepresence events and a follow-up session for leaders I worked with earlier in 2011, conducted in New York City, all based on lessons from the book.  
  • Best Practice Institute - a webinar with BPI members on the concepts of Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Bank of America - a session with new senior leaders in New York City to reinforce the importance of continuing to develop their leadership skills, using the tips and advice from Bootstrap Leadership.
  • ASTD - a book briefing for the Washington, DC chapter of ASTD.  We talked about leadership challenges, and how leaders everywhere need to keep working on their game. 
  • Lockheed Martin - each quarter throughout 2011, I am joining the Security Team's international conference call to talk about a chapter from Bootstrap Leadership.  
  • Author Interview w/ Wendy Mack - a fun interview with consultant Wendy Mack. Download the interview at  http://wendymack.com/resources/wendy-mack-interviews.html 
  • Executive Networks - at the Talent & Leadership Development Network (TLDN) meeting in Washington, DC, I led a discussion of leadership self-development. 
  • Marriott - the lessions and coaching tips from Bootstrap Leadership were featured in an afternoon session at Marriott's week-long GM Leadership Program.
  • DirecTV Video Clips - we filmed a couple of video clips for DirecTV's 2,000 managers about "getting the most out of your team" using two lessons from Bootstrap Leadership.
  • HRA-NCA State Conference - a keynote address at this Virginia HR professional's conference in Washington, DC.  We talked about how HR can help leaders develop using the tips and ideas from Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Ashland - a leadership workshop for this speciality chemicals company, conducted in Wilmington, DE.  A great audience who really got into the spirit of developing themselves as a leaders. 
  • Author Interview w/ Team Approach - Susan Stamm recorded an interview with me about the lessons of Bootstrap Leadership, which is featured on their website at http://www.teamapproach.com/bookends/Bootstrap_Leadership.asp   
  • Leadership Franklin County - a full day, large audience event in Greencastle, PA for leaders throughout Franklin County, PA.  Lots of time to dive deep into the concepts and exercises of Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Leadership Excellence - another article inspired by Bootstrap Leadership (The Employee Bill of Rights) was published in April, 2011.
  • Boeing - An evening keynote address for a collection of Boeing leadership development program participants at their beautiful Leadership Development Center in St. Louis, MO.   
  • Georgetown University - Bringing the concept of self-development to a group of undergraduates. We talked about working for good and bad bosses when they get into the workforce, and the power of continuous learning.
  • The Smart Manager (India) - Chapter 10 of Bootstrap Leadership (vision, mission & strategy) is featured in a 2,000 word article published in this popular bi-monthly business magazine. 
  • India Publishing Rights - McGraw-Hill announces that it will publish the English reprint edition of Bootstrap Leadership in India in 2011.
  • American Express - An interactive session with the global compensation & benefits team in New York, NY.
  • BNY Mellon – This workshop was an “alumni” event for senior leaders who’ve been part of a broader leadership development program in New York, NY.
  • Leadership Examiner – Throughout 2011, I’m including tips from Bootstrap Leadership in my twice-weekly column at leadershipexaminer.com.
  • Author Interview w/ Pat Williams – A radio interview with the Orlando Magic executive, author and motivational speaker about Bootstrap Leadership and the concept of leadership self-development 
  • Chinese Launch – The Chinese version of Bootstrap Leadership has arrived; look for it in leading bookstores throughout China in 2011!
  • Author Interview w/ Corporate University Xchange – An interview with Rebecca Ray about the ideas and purpose behind Bootstrap Leadership.

2010

  • Cognizant – This session was held in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with senior business leaders from one of the leading global IT solutions company.
  • Northern Virginia SHRM – In this Arlington, VA session, we discussed how HR professionals can help leaders do more to develop as people managers.
  • Leadership Excellence – The second article from the book (People Leadership: Ask Your People 5 Questions) was published in the November, 2010 issue.
  • DirecTV – As part of a new leadership development program, I delivered a Bootstrap Leadership session for senior leaders in Los Angeles, CA.
  • MHS – A workshop for global leaders from this nonprofit international health organization located in Washington, DC.
  • Outlook Business (India) – My first article about Bootstrap Leadership in a non-US publication. Outlook Business is similar in scope to Business Week or Fortune magazine.
  • Agilent – A live webinar event, broadcast once for domestic leaders and again for international managers. A well-planned production that included senior Agilent leaders.
  • CarMax – Two interactive Bootstrap Leadership workshops with 150 leaders in Richmond, VA. We talked about the commitment and focused required to develop your leadership skills.
  • Allstate – A keynote address to Allstate’s top leadership team, and an afternoon session with a group of emerging leaders to provide tips and ideas for continuing their leadership development.
  • AOL – An intimate group of AOL leaders in Dulles, VA. We had some great conversations about leading change, applying the lessons of Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Lockheed Martin – Two hundred leaders from the Security group plus a beautiful auditorium made for a special keynote event in Bethesda, MD.
  • Dimension Data – A three hour leadership retreat in Annapolis, MD. The participants were highly engaged; we had a great time exploring ways to improve as leaders.
  • Executive Networks – This webinar was conducted interview-style with Mike Dullworth, CEO of Executive Networks, a corporate best practices group specializing in HR topics.
  • UBS – Two sessions in New York, NY and Stamford, CT for emerging leaders who were in a series of self-development courses, one of which featured the tips and ideas from Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Genworth – An engaging session in Richmond, VA with the senior HR team. Using the book, we discussed the best ways to get leaders onto a consistent leadership development path.
  • Leesburg SHRM – An opportunity to speak about the book with a local HR networking group, in Leesburg, VA.
  • Duke CE – The premier provider of customized leadership development programs invited me to speak to a group of their developers about Bootstrap Leadership in Durham, NC.
  • SkillSoft Leadership Forum - Skillsoft hosts a number of regional forums for their clients; this one, in Reston, VA, featured a highly interactive discussion of Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Japanese & Chinese Publication Rights – Berrett-Koehler sold the foreign publishing rights to Bootstrap Leadership to two companies who will translate and distribute the book in 2011.
  • Leadership Excellence – I’ve written many articles for Leadership Excellence magazine – this one, titled 5 Ways to Make Yourself a Better Leader (May, 2010), was the first to feature concepts directly from Bootstrap Leadership.

2009

  • Lockheed Martin – This “virtual” tour of the book was presented to Lockheed Martin’s global HR and OD team in a 90 minute webinar.
  • MicroStrategy – At their annual conference of international HR professionals in Washington, DC, I outlined the power of helping leaders “self-develop” using the tips and techniques from Bootstrap Leadership.
  • Executive Forum – The first keynote address featuring concepts and exercises from the book was delivered to a group of senior business leaders in Stamford, CT.
  • SkillSoft - At a TV studio in Alexandria, VA, we made a video of Bootstrap Leadership for SkillSoft, the online learning company. Featured on Skillsoft’s Leadership Development Center, the video can be accessed by employees in subscriber companies worldwide.
